Hello - and welcome! I'm so glad you're here!
My name is Shaylin Montgomery. For the past ten years, I've been teaching Language Arts (and Theatre) at a rural high school in southeastern Missouri.
I am a passionate advocate of lifelong learning. I believe, very strongly, that good teachers must constantly examine and expand on their own thinking - especially when it comes to pedagogy. To paraphrase a former professor of mine, "A good teacher will teach thirty years. A poor teacher will teach the same year thirty times."
I created this website for a couple of reasons. The first is simple: to share with other teachers the things that I've learned - through reading and study, but also through years of experience. I'll be posting blog reflections as well as links to audiobooks and lesson plans I've created - much of which will be available for FREE!
Of course, as an ELA teacher, I also possess a deep love of stories. And so, this website was also designed to house my stories - stories about education, life, history, pop culture, and the world at large. These stories will typically take the form of blog posts and episodes of my original podcast "History Magnified."
Enjoy!
For those of you who are interested, here are a few of my qualifications: in addition to a decade of experience in the classroom, I also have a Bachelor's degree in English Education and a Master's degree in Professional Writing from Southeast Missouri State University as well as a Doctor of Education degree in Literacy, Culture, and Language Education from Indiana University; you can read about my dissertation by clicking the link above. I've also been published in numerous literary magazines - including Journey and the Mighty River Rose Anthology.
